When the Old Playbook No Longer Fits

For most of my life, I’ve kept my thoughts close.

I’m not naturally drawn to public platforms. I don’t chase engagement. My default has always been to stay in my lane and focus on the work. That instinct served me well as a player—and later, as a coach, advisor, and builder. But in today’s digital-first world, silence can send the wrong signals.

People start to make assumptions in the absence of your voice. They fill in the gaps based on what they think you’re about—usually based on what they already know.

That was the tension I sat in for years.

So when I started publishing From the Desk of Marques Colston, it wasn’t a content strategy—it was a personal pivot. A way to process my own transitions. I had just closed down an executive coaching practice I loved and was in the middle of redefining what the next chapter would look like. And I knew I wasn’t the only one navigating uncertainty.

FDMC gave me a way to share what I’d learned—while I was still learning. It became a place to put language around the experiences, frameworks, and mindset shifts that helped me move forward.

It hasn’t always been perfect. But it’s been transformational in quiet, meaningful ways.

Writing as a Reset

I didn’t set out to be a writer. I started writing to make sense of the gap between who I was becoming—and how the world still saw me.

For a long time, I was navigating multiple lanes: investor, operator, coach, speaker. The roles were stacking up, but the perception stayed flat. Most people still led with the athlete label, or the last version of me they were familiar with. And I wasn’t doing much to challenge that narrative.

Writing changed that. It gave me:

• A structure to organize and share ideas I’d only processed internally

• A format to teach—through lived experience, not just performance

Most importantly, it reminded me that clarity isn’t something you find. It’s something you build—line by line, story by story.

One of the biggest realizations I’ve had through writing is that my advantage isn’t in how many experiences I’ve had—it’s in how I’ve connected them.

Coaching a startup founder, leading an executive team, making a personnel decision as a GM, stepping into an investor meeting—they’re all different environments. But the challenges are often the same.

Most people look at my path and see a set of random experiences. I’ve learned to see something different. The value isn’t in the variety—it’s in the ability to synthesize across them.

Over the years, I’ve learned how to extract the insight and build the muscle memory. That’s the real unlock. That’s what I call synthesis.
